Laid Back and Letting Go

The garden rakes have made their annual appearance,

As always, I love that the trees remind us how lovely it is to let go.

But can you imagine what would happen if they didn’t?

What would happen if the trees held on tightly to those leaves—even as they dried and shriveled?

What if they clutched those dead leaves firmly in place throughout the winter? What if they were afraid to let go?

Not only would it block the new growth of spring, but it could also cause real damage—just like during the October storm in my hometown of Buffalo in 2006.

The storm came early while trees still held their leaves, and the heavy snow brought them down, resulting in considerable destruction. To this day, it was one of the city’s most disruptive weather events.

So many of us have a hard time letting go, even after it’s clear we should.

Our minds and schedules are often so jam-packed that there’s no space to allow anything else in.

Thankfully, the trees are not like us.

Letting go comes easy for the trees—natural.

It can be the same for us.

Let’s welcome this season of letting go and making room for the beauty of what’s to come.

RELEASE RITUAL

“I am ready to release that which no longer serves me.”

Here’s a ritual I’ve tried before that made a substantial impact. It’s quick and straightforward, perfect for autumn reflection.

Start by taking a few deep breaths and creating a calm space.

Write “I am letting go of…” at the top of a small piece of paper and list everything you feel ready to release this season.

Take your time with it, and notice any unexpected thoughts that arise.

When you’re done, light a small fire and safely burn the paper or tear it into small pieces, imagining those things leaving you, creating space for something new.

This has been a powerful way to create space for new energy.

Oh, btw…

In a special three-part series on the podcast, we’re letting go of the 3 Ps: people-pleasing, perfectionism, and procrastination. If one of those three was on your list, tune in.

LAID-BACK LATTICEWORK

How To Take The Snoop Dogg Approach To Your Career

Years ago, a manager asked me what kind of experiences I wanted to gain in human resources. This question resonated with me, and it never left.

What if we let go of stressing over the next promotion and the constant push to climb higher and faster?

What if we focused on pursuing experiences that energize and inspire us instead?

I imagine a career like that would look a bit like Snoop Dogg’s—and that doesn’t sound half bad.
