Careers In The Age Of AI: Why Human Connection Matters More Than Ever

I’m endlessly fascinated by unusual plants. For instance, can you imagine a 20- to 40-foot, massive asparagus spear? They exist.

Well—sort of. They’re not actually asparagus, though that’s what they resemble. They’re called century plants. (FYI: The name is a misnomer; they actually live 10 to 30 years.) And at the very end of their lifespan, something wild happens: They bloom fast.

We’re talking up to 6 inches of growth per day. Then, once fully bloomed, they…die.

Strangely enough, watching the job search and hiring process evolve over the years has felt a lot like watching a century plant bloom…and die. What once grew slowly and deliberately has accelerated into something almost unrecognizable. And yes—it’s safe to say the online job application process is officially broken.

But here’s the good news: In the era of AI-driven job searches, your humanity—your judgment, story, and voice—can still be the thing that helps you bloom.

How The Searching And Hiring Process Has Changed For Job Seekers And Employers Alike

Thirty years ago, job hunting looked nothing like it does today.

You walked into a brick-and-mortar, filled out a paper application, handed over your resume, maybe shook a few hands. Hiring managers had paper files stacked on their desks. The process was slow, the applicant pool was small, and human bias was baked into every decision.

Then the internet arrived.

Suddenly, you could apply to jobs from your couch. Email a PDF resume, maybe a cover letter, and wait. But the work became a lot more tedious for recruiters, who were reviewing far more applicants as the application process became faster and easier.

Recruiters had to manually scan resumes for keywords, often spending 3 to 5 minutes per application. Reviewing 100 resumes could take an entire day.

Fast forward 10 years: Social hiring went mainstream. LinkedIn let job seekers research companies, find connections, and click “Easy Apply” to submit applications instantly. For recruiters, it meant more talent but also more chaos. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of applicants for a single role.

Enter remote work. Geography no longer limited opportunity. One click could connect candidates to the perfect job anywhere in the world.

And now… [AI enters the chat.]

At what seems like turbo speed, the job application and review process has become an entirely different beast. Job searching and hiring have shifted—from paper files and handshakes to one-click applications and AI-driven decisions.

The game has changed. There’s no going back.

And that is both good (yay, time saved!)…and really bad.

The Black Hole Effect: Why Your Resume Feels Invisible

You used to be able to use resumes and applications to showcase your unique skills and experiences, but now clicking “submit” feels like dropping it into a black hole. Your time and effort are being swallowed by systems that aren’t built for humans—they’re built for algorithms.

Here’s what’s happening:

+ Almost everyone is using AI: More than half of job seekers use AI to craft resumes and cover letters, making applications look increasingly similar and less personal.

+ Resumes are written for machines, not humans: AI-driven resumes are now optimized for Applicant Tracking System (ATS) keywords and formatting, often at the cost of individuality and storytelling.

+ Overreliance on AI is backfiring: AI-generated content is often generic, vague, or inaccurate. If it is not carefully reviewed and customized, there’s a good chance it will misrepresent your skills and experience

+ Human connection is missing: AI screening tools often replace early recruiter interactions, limiting opportunities to highlight qualities that algorithms can’t capture.

How Employers Are Screening Candidates In The Era Of AI

AI has transformed hiring, making it faster and more efficient—but not without consequences. What used to be a manual, time-intensive process has become highly automated, reshaping how employers review candidates and interact with applicants.

+ From hours to minutes: Reviewing 100 resumes once took roughly 10 hours. Today, AI can do it in about an hour.

+ Automating tedious tasks: AI speeds up hiring by summarizing candidate information, ranking resumes against job descriptions, and reducing screen time by up to 75%.

+ Chatbots for candidate interaction: AI-powered chatbots answer common questions, guide applicants, and even conduct initial assessments, freeing recruiters to focus on more strategic, human-centered work.

Why That Can Be A Problem…

AI has accelerated the review and hiring process, but it also risks turning the process into a preemptive, mechanical filter.

In my work, I’ve spoken to job seekers who carefully tailored their resumes, only to hear nothing back for weeks. AI isn’t mean—it’s just indifferent. And that can feel heartbreaking.

Advanced ATS systems can filter out candidates before a human ever sees their resume, meaning qualified applicants can be overlooked simply because the algorithm didn’t “score” them highly enough.
Rest assured, even the best candidates are struggling to get noticed by the machine.

Tools, Not Replacements: How To Work With AI Without Losing Yourself

Use AI as a tool, not a replacement for you. AI is a tool to streamline the job search, so, yes, use it to help you:

+ Tailor your resumes and cover letters to match keywords and ATS requirements.
+ Refine messages and outreach to be more concise.
+ Research companies, break down job descriptions, and generate talking points for interviews.

But, most importantly, remember that human interaction remains essential. Never let AI replace YOU. AI may be revolutionizing the world of work, but the value of human intuition, old-school relationship-building, and creativity remains unmatched.

Human Connection Is Key To Flourishing In Your Career

Just as the century plant invests years into growth before blooming, your career flourishes when you nurture real human connections over time. Relationships matter—not just for getting hired, but for long-term career fulfillment.

I always say this: Think about a time someone left your team. The first question asked is always, “Who do you know that would be a good fit?” Strong relationships put you in that mental Rolodex before jobs ever hit a board.

To bypass the ATS and connect with humans:

+ Leverage your network, start with people you know, and let them know what you’re looking for.
+ Reach out directly to hiring managers on LinkedIn.
+ Send a personalized message that demonstrates the value you bring beyond the standard application.

Ritual For Connection: Reflect And Renew

To cultivate stronger, more genuine, supportive connections, pause and notice who has shown up for you this season. Make a list and select someone who stood out.

Then send them a simple note of thanks—a text that doesn’t require a response or—even better—a handwritten message. Share something that reminds you of that person or simply say hello. Snail mail is my thing lately, but whatever you decide to do, just remember: No pressure…just gratitude.
