We all know the importance of feedback in career development, but does the word “feedback” cause an adverse emotional reaction for you (or is it just me?) 😬

What if we tried shifting our focus from dwelling on what went “wrong” to thinking about how we can improve? That small shift could make a real difference.

In today’s episode, I talk through the three types of feedback:

🗣️ Appreciation
🗣️ Coaching
🗣️ Evaluation

PLUS, I’ll share three open-ended questions you can use today to ask for feedback.

The bottom line: Feedback seeks to improve performance, which is invaluable for career growth when received with humility and analyzed effectively.

Key Takeaways From Today’s Episode

I realize “feedback” can be a source of anxiety, although when provided with intention, it can help recognize blind spots and achieve success.

Let’s start by breaking down the three types of feedback:
+ Appreciation: Connects and motivates us
+ Coaching: Helps us learn and expand our knowledge, skills, and capabilities
+ Evaluation: Assesses our skills and abilities against a set of standards

As a former HR leader, I’ve learned firsthand the importance of giving feedback with intention.

Here are my guidelines for giving feedback:

  • Examine your intentions.
  • Lead with questions.
  • Maintain the person’s self-esteem.
  • Be specific.
  • Focus on performance.
  • Suggest alternatives.
  • Provide feedback within 24 hours.
  • End on a positive note.

When receiving feedback:

  • Listen carefully.
  • Ask for specific examples.
  • Avoid defensiveness or blame.
  • Use what works for you.
  • Thank the person for the feedback.

Feedback can take your career to the next level when you remain open to accepting valuable information.

As Stephen Covey said:
“It takes humility to seek feedback. It takes wisdom to understand it, analyze it, and appropriately act on it.”
