Often, people hear the word “ritual” and envision witchy or religious practices, but those are not the only kinds of rituals.
Rituals are the heartbeat of growth. They are small, intentional acts, both physical and mental, that can help ground and grow you. You can use daily, weekly, monthly, or seasonal rituals to bring meaning to your actions, emotions, and transitions.
Personally, I love using rituals that align with the rhythm of nature—the rising of the sun, the changing of the seasons. Rituals that align with nature (and something bigger than yourself) can serve to ground you even in times of uncertainty or stress.
For example, sitting down at your desk and opening your laptop is likely a habit. You do it every day without thinking about it.
To make it a ritual, you might commit to turning on a playlist, taking three deep breaths, and setting an intention before you open your laptop.
Both actions can be done daily to begin your work, but only one takes you out of autopilot and grounds you in a space of mindfulness. I’m not saying you have to turn everything into a grand ceremony, but being a bit more intentional can create a subtle shift in how the moment feels. And, for me, that’s what rituals are all about.
A ritual is sacred—not because of how elaborate it is, but because of how intentional it is.
1. Presence/Calm
Rituals can give you an immediate sense of presence and calm as they invite you into the moment, quieting any mental noise.
2. Increased Focus
When you begin a task by incorporating a small ritual (i.e., turning on a playlist, setting an intention, or writing a to-do list by hand), you shift your brain from a state of distraction to one of concentration. A ritual provides a clear boundary (before/after), increasing your focus on the task.
1. Feeling grounded, even during times of upheaval
Rituals provide much-needed support during times of change (and we all have to become adept at change!). When life or career seasons shift, rituals create a rhythm that acts as an anchor. No matter how much uncertainty you face or questions you hold in your heart, you return to the ritual again and again.
2. Greater self-trust
There’s something to be said about keeping a promise to yourself. When you keep promises to yourself, even tiny ones, your self-confidence grows. With repetition over time, you’ll come to see yourself as someone who can follow through.
3. Less autopilot, more mindfulness
Even tiny moments of ritual matter because these are the moments that shape your life! When you get intentional with your small rituals, your whole life will shift. You’re no longer living on autopilot; you’ve moved into a space of mindfulness. And life becomes more joyful.
4. Gratitude
Best of all, rituals help you experience and appreciate the goodness in everyday life. Daily, weekly, and monthly, you remind yourself of what matters most and you reconnect to your roots.
Crafting your own rituals—acts that are meaningful and joyful to you—means that you’re more likely to keep doing them. That is how change happens: in small, consistent steps.
Perhaps there’s a ritual you once loved but have since abandoned? Or maybe it’s time to create a new one?
You can begin by adding small rituals at three levels:
Daily: Commit to doing one tiny act for yourself or your career change each day. Light a candle, push play on a song you love, and then do that one small thing.
Weekly: At the end of each week, complete a short check-in reflection with yourself. What energized you this week? What drained you? Add gratitude to your ritual or take a few moments to organize your space.
Monthly: Set a simple intention for the transition between months. With intention, create space to revisit your career goals with fresh eyes and then release what no longer serves you. You could also reflect on what went well and what you want to do differently next month.
In just five minutes a day, you can transform ordinary moments into meaningful pauses that will help you stay present and grounded in what matters.
The daily Five Minutes To Flourish ritual is the one that’s helped me the most. Every career change I’ve made—every meaningful pivot and project—began with this ritual. With five quiet minutes, at the start or end of the day, I can do one small thing toward what I most want next.
+ It might be as simple as writing a single sentence for an email.
+ Or sending a voice message to a colleague to thank them for their support.
+ Or simply taking a moment to get alllll the thoughts out of my head and onto paper.
Sometimes, those five minutes turn into thirty. Other days, they’re all I have. However, over time, those small, sacred moments are what accumulate into lasting change.
