We explore where the drive for perfection comes from. It can stem from fear of failure, need for approval, childhood experiences, societal expectations, or personal insecurities. Recognizing these sources can help us address and manage our perfectionist tendencies.
Recognizing the Pitfalls
Perfectionism, while sometimes fueling outstanding achievements, often comes at a high cost, including procrastination, exhaustion, and stifled creativity. I share personal experiences from my corporate HR career, highlighting how striving for perfection impacted my professional life and well-being.
Strategies to Let Go of Perfectionism
We discussed practical steps to shift away from a perfectionist mindset:
+ Setting intentions instead of rigid goals means focusing on progress rather than perfection.
+ Adopting the practice of submitting “drafts” to alleviate the pressure of achieving perfection on the first try.
+ Breaking tasks into manageable steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed and to maintain momentum.
As a bonus, we touched on being “joyfully ambitious,” encouraging a blend of high achievement with a spirit of joy and enthusiasm. This approach helps keep the process enjoyable and fulfilling.
