Over the years, every time I’ve felt stuck, I start by clearing the weeds…that is, decluttering, in whatever form that takes.
Even something as simple as clearing off my desk is enough to help me take a breath, and somehow, that small act of simplifying creates space for bigger things.
Doors open. Ideas sprout. Growth resumes.
And I’ve learned the same principle applies to our careers.
Career simplicity is the practice of de-centering work and realigning your professional life with your core values. When you do, work becomes less about relentless climbing and more about tending what’s actually yours to grow.
With confidence, you choose roles, projects, and paths that reflect your values, your energy, and where you actually want to go.
Here’s how to start.
Before anything else, return to the soil of your soul. Consider what matters most right now. Not five years ago, not what you thought you wanted, not what others expect.
Ask yourself: What is most important right now?
Your responses will tell you more than anything you read online.
Pay attention to what energizes you and what drains you. Your energy is data. The work that lights you up points to something (and so does the work that leaves you depleted).
You don’t have to act *right now* on everything you notice; just start noticing.
In gardening, we focus on one season at a time. We don’t plant for five years out; we tend to what’s in front of us this season. Your career can work the same way.
Rather than mapping out a long-term master plan, ask: What is ready to seed or grow next? What feels aligned for this season of your life and work?
Once you know what you’re growing, resist the urge to do everything at once. Simple rituals and tiny actions, done consistently, are what make real change happen. Choose one or two things to focus on and then let them compound over time. That’s how the magic happens.
If you want a physical guide for this, the weekly opening and closing rituals inside the In Season planner are designed with simplification in mind. These weekly rituals will help you spotlight your priorities, release/redesign distractions, and let anything unfinished flow forward rather than pile up.
When we are growing a garden, we trust the sun to shine and the rain to come. A meaningful career requires that same kind of trust. What is meant for you is waiting for you.
Success isn’t always acceleration… sometimes it’s learning, resting, or exploring. Sometimes it’s releasing control over outcomes and paying close attention to what matters most right now.
A simpler career is a more intentional career…and it is possible for you.
At Flourish Careers, we believe that simplifying isn’t about doing less for the sake of it. It’s about focusing on what matters most in this season.
Together, we’ve built a growing community of career-minded individuals seeking a more fulfilling, heart-centered approach to work. You don’t have to continue feeling stuck. You can begin planting the seeds of career change—and start flourishing.
