Show Me the Money (Without the Awkwardness!)
Let’s be real—talking about salary at work can feel awkward… but it doesn’t have to be! In this episode, I’m joined by my friend and fellow career coach, Yolanda Owens, and we’re diving into how to approach money conversations confidently and clearly.
We explore salary transparency—why it matters, how it builds trust, and what companies can do beyond sharing numbers. When done right, transparency can level the playing field, drive equity, and empower everyone. Let’s make talking about money feel less taboo and more empowering.
Salary Transparency: Why It Matters & What to Consider
Talking about money at work has long been taboo, but in recent years, salary transparency has gained momentum. While open discussions can uncover pay disparities and promote equity, they also come with risks—like misunderstandings if salaries are compared without context. Employers need informed transparency, ensuring employees understand pay structures without unnecessary friction.
How to Navigate Salary Conversations
Yolanda shares expert strategies for approaching salary discussions with confidence and professionalism:
+ Know your “why” behind the ask.
+ Approach with curiosity. Instead of “How much do you make?” try: “What’s the market rate for this role?”
+ Rely on data, not emotions. Use salary benchmarking tools to support your case.
+ If you discover a pay gap, don’t get mad at your coworker. Have a conversation with leadership or HR: “I want to ensure my compensation aligns with my contributions. Can we discuss pay structures?”
Employer Accountability & The Future of Pay Transparency
With salary transparency laws in several U.S. states, we’re seeing shifts in pay equity. Employers must strike a balance between fairness, consistent pay philosophies, and company culture while ensuring internal equity.
Should You Discuss Your Salary With Coworkers? Ask Yourself:
+ Is this someone I trust for a constructive conversation?
+ Should I start by discussing industry market rates instead of specifics?
+ Am I comfortable with the risks and benefits of sharing my salary details?
The Bottom Line:
Salary transparency discussions are effective when used strategically. Whether you’re negotiating a raise or considering sharing salary info with a coworker, knowledge, professionalism, and preparation are key to advocating for fair pay.
