You know that feeling of a fresh start? The beginning of a new week, the first page of a calendar, or diving into a brand-new project? New energy is refreshing, and I’m all for harnessing it to its fullest potential!
Most of us are familiar with auditing our time—finding where we’re wasting it and redirecting it to things that truly matter. Time is like a precious commodity; once it’s gone, it’s gone. But what if we did the same for our energy?
A personal energy audit is like giving yourself a supercharged boost for the year ahead. It’s about making sure that the things you do daily not only don’t drain you but revitalize you.
Physical
First up, we’ve got the body or physical energy. We’re talking nutrition, exercise, and sleep. But, how many of us take this seriously?
We’ve all had those moments where we’re indulging in sugary, processed foods, glued to our chairs for hours, or scrolling through our phones late into the night. And then, we wonder why our energy is at rock bottom.
Good news —it’s one of the most accessible energies to replenish!
Emotional
Emotional energy is up next. This one requires more effort to see a change.
We’ve all felt stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed at some point. Emotional energy can take a hit when activities drain us emotionally. But guess what? We hold the power to control our emotions and boost our energy.
Tracking gratitude daily, expressing appreciation to others, spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, and mastering deep breathing can all help cultivate positive emotional energy.
Mental
Now, let’s dive into the mental energy. I recently saw a meme that said, “My mind is like my internet browser—19 tabs are open, three are frozen, and I have no idea where the music is coming from.” Sound familiar?
We’re living in an age of information overload, and it’s easy to feel drained mentally. To replenish that mental energy, we must ditch the “shoulds” and distractions and focus on what truly inspires and excites us. Get creative, play, and list daily delights—tiny things that bring you joy and give you something to look forward to.
Spiritual
Lastly, we have the spirit or connective energy. This one’s the big one but often overlooked. Spiritual energy comes from living with meaning and purpose, aligning your work and daily activities with your values.
Feeling powerless at work, disconnected from others, or lacking direction can all drain your spiritual energy.
The secret to boosting it is to do what you do best, devote time to what matters most, and live in a way that aligns with your core values.
Conduct Your Energy Audit
Now, it’s time to conduct an energy audit on your typical week. Everything you do daily either energizes or drains you.
Mapping out a typical week, color-coding your activities, and identifying patterns can help you adjust to optimize your energy.
Make energy audits a regular part of your 90-day seasonal planning.
As you reflect on the past year and plan for the new one, ask yourself questions like:
+What cultivated my energy?
+What drained it?
+What do I want to celebrate?
+Which lifestyle values need adjustment?
Use these guiding questions to make adjustments for a more fulfilling path.
