Have you considered moving on from your current career path? If so, what’s holding you back?
In my work, many people hold roles far longer than they would like.
And, of course, this is for a couple of reasons:
+Change is hard.
+Quitting feels wrong.
There’s this unique feeling of shame that accompanies quitting. Maybe it’s due to the messaging we’ve received since childhood: “Quitters never win, and winners never quit.”
Or perhaps it’s because—as a society—we’ve adopted the term “quitting” to refer to any time someone resigns from a job, regardless of the reason.
Or we may dread leaving our beloved team or colleagues. We hate doing anything that might hurt them—no matter how much staying hurts us.
But it is interesting to see what happens when we apply this same quitting benchmark to nature:
+Was the butterfly quitting when it flew away from its chrysalis?
+Is the daffodil a quitter for retreating into the earth each winter?
No. It was time to move on. The season is finished.
And who are we to hold ourselves to a higher standard than nature?
So, I like to think that in the same way the flower enters its next season, feeding its petals back to the earth…
We, too, can embrace new beginnings with the certainty that we’re growing, not giving up.
Quitting and completing both mark the end of something, but they come from different mindsets. Imagine leaving your role with a sense of accomplishment, knowing you’ve completed your work there.
Annie Duke, a former poker pro turned decision strategist, suggests looking at your “betting odds” for happiness.

“Quit, like the opposite of grit. While grit can get you to stick to hard things that are worthwhile, grit can also get you to stick to hard things that are no longer worthwhile… And life’s too short for that.”
